Junior Bowls Development Program
One Tuesday afternoon in February 2001 eight primary school students from St Michael's Lutheran Primary School and Hahndorf Primary School met after school at the Hahndorf Bowling Club and commenced the first coaching program of Junior Bowling. After a six week coaching period the same students took part in the first Alick Collins Cup Competition which was named after one of the founding members of the Hahndorf Bowling Club.
Lenswood - Alick Collins Cup Winners 2009
Whilst the concept of our Junior Bowls Development Program has changed from an after school project to its now being conducted during school hours, the basic premise hasn't altered. That is to introduce primary and, where possible, secondary school students to the game of lawn bowls.
The aim of the program is :-
-
To teach an alternative sport to students.
-
To introduce bowling to young people as a possible future sport for their involvement.
-
To give interested students the opportunity to reach the Junior State Squad level.
-
To provide a Community Service through junior sport.
For example, in 2009 the students from seven schools were coached. Involved were St Michael's, Hahndorf, Littlehampton, Verdun Christian, Oakbank Area, Lenswood and Gumeracha schools. This meant that in excess of 300 primary school students were being introduced to Lawn Bowls. At the conclusion of some 7 weeks coaching, 112 boys and girls took part in the Alick Collins Cup Competition for that year held between 12 noon and 3pm on a Tuesday in March/April at the end of the coaching program.
Approximately 15 to 20 Hahndorf bowlers regularly assist with the coaching program which is managed by a Junior Bowls Development Committee of the Club.
Since its commencement in 2001, the Club has applied for grants from the Active Club Grants Program and up to 2009 has received in excess of $10,000. Many sets of small bowls, target mats, jacks, measures and other equipment have been purchased.
The Club has been able to obtain excellent publicity for Junior Bowls including articles in the 'South Australian Bowler' which is distributed to all members of every bowling club in South Australia. Also, the local hills newspaper 'The Courier' has given very good coverage in both stories and Photos.
This publicity benefits the whole Club and lawn bowling in general and is seen as a worthwhile community service.
